RAANANA'S CENTRAL MEMORIAL CEREMONY FOR THE HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY ENTITLED "AND THE WORLD REMAINS SILENT"   A CEREMONY IN WHICH NAMES OF HOLOCAUST VICTIMS WERE RECITED BY STUDENTS AND RESIDENTS TOOK PLACE AT THE YAD LABANIM PLAZA.

On Sunday night (15.4.07), at the Yad LaBanim Plaza, the Raanana Municipality held a municipal memorial ceremony for Holocaust Remembrance Day, entitled "And the World Remains Silent", with a focus on the denial of the Holocaust. The memorial ceremony was attended by Mayor Nahum Hofree, city council members, Raanana Chief Rabbi, Yitzchak Peretz and dignitaries.

During the ceremony, excerpts from the President of Iran's recent speech, in which he denies the Holocaust, were read aloud, along with an excerpt from Eli Wiesel's speech. Holocaust survivor, Eli Wiesel is a celebrated Jewish intellectual and Nobel Peace Prize recipient. In addition, drama students from Raanana's Klaim School of Drama presented a segment dealing with the decimation of the Jewish Diaspora in Europe and its resurgence in the Land of Israel.

Mayor Nahum Hofree: "Our memory of the Holocaust has not diminished or faded. The memory is still vivid and alive, scathing and unrelenting in the heart of every Jew, wherever he may be. It cries out upon hearing the siren, it accompanies every young man and woman, every soldier and every official representative of the State of Israel, who visits the death camps. It is important to us all that the younger generation understands that by their death, the victims of the Holocaust bequeathed us the imperative to live. After facing the depth of man's depravity, we have emerged victorious, not only as individuals, but as an entire nation, by finding a fitting answer to the horror by establishing our own state."

On Monday, there was a ceremony in which the names of Holocaust victims were recited during the morning and afternoon hours by students and residents along with musical and dramatic interludes. On the stage, a torch in memory of the six million Jews who perished was lit. Raanana residents participated in the ceremony by reciting the names of their loved ones who perished in the Holocaust.
