The school’s competing robots won three spots in the top ten

Ostrovsky High School won three spots in the top ten at the International Roboner Competition held recently in Connecticut, U.S.

The Ostrovsky robotics team presented three robots, whose primary task was to extinguish a candle inside an apartment, while passing through obstacles, and then to exit the apartment.  The three robots from Raanana won top places – second, sixth and seventh, competing against 200 groups from around the world.

For the first time this year, a group from Indonesia participated, competing against groups from Canada, Belgium and the U.S.

Ostrovsky High School represented Israel at the international competition, along with other Israeli schools, after having hosted the national Roboner 2010 competition this past March at Raanana’s Municipal Sports Center.  The national contest was held in Raanana for the 2nd consecutive year, as part of Mayor Nahum’s philosophy of promoting science and robotics studies.

At the international competition, three 12th grade students from Ostrovsky’s robotics department participated, along with department coordinator, Ofer Ben Yosef.  The Ostrovsky robotics department is comprised of 30 students in grades 11 and 12 who study the field at the 5 unit level.

This impressive achievement at the international competition, is another in a series of robotics department achievements in recent years.  In 2007, the robotics team won first place at the international Roboner Competition; and last year, the high school students won first place at the national competition in the KIT category and fourth and eighth place in the Standard category.

Mayor Nahum Hofree: “Raanana’s education system continues with its achievements in the field of building technological leadership.  I congratulate the Ostrovsky students who dedicated many hours of thought, planning and implementation and reached impressive and prestigious results and have represented Raanana at the international competition with honor.”
